Mississinewa 1812 is the largest War of 1812 living history event in the United States - a unique opportunity to learn about America’s early frontier days through hands-on history.

Hosted by the not-for-profit Mississinewa Battlefield Society, this annual event commemorates the Battle of Mississinewa, which took place right here in Grant County on December 17th and 18th, 1812.

 

Families, students, and history lovers of all ages can explore authentic camps, meet historical reenactors, and experience life in the Indiana Territory as it was over 200 years ago.

Step into the past, and discover the stories that helped shape our nation.

Military Encampments
Experience the days of the War of 1812 in the British and American military camps. View the daily life of the War of 1812 soldier. Ongoing demonstrations include field drill, artillery firing, musket and rifle drill, battlefield surgery, and daily battle reenactments.

Native American Village
The ancient culture of the woodland Indian dominates the largest reconstructed woodland Indian village in the United States. In addition to storytelling and music, there are ongoing demonstrations of fire starting, cooking, and many other aspects of Native American life.

Merchants Town
More than 200 merchants, artisans, food purveyors and musicians will delight you with their wares, demonstrations of late 18th Century to early 19th Century crafts, food and drink of 1812. Our vendors offer reproductions of many 1812 necessities including silver and tin ware, pottery, muskets, and candles.

Wilderness Area
Life along the rivers and streams in 1812 is recreated in the trapper, voyager, and pirate camps along the river. Each camp features ongoing demonstrations of fire starting, open fire cooking and storytelling in this unique display of wilderness life. Don't be shy about inquiring into to their lifestyle.

Food and Drink
Numerous food purveyors offer delicious historical foods ranging from buffalo burgers to fire-cooked ribs, turkey and chicken, hearty stews, baked potatoes, fry bread, pies, fresh apple cider and so much more! The aroma is sure to whet your appetite.

Traditional Crafts
Stop and visit with any of our early 19th Century master printers, artisans, gunsmiths, tinsmiths, silversmiths, soap makers, blacksmiths, flintknappers, weavers, and other traditional craftsmen.

Music, Song and Stories
History comes alive with our talented performers and musicians including bagpipes, native drums, water harps, fiddles, fife and drums, vocalists, traditional church service, and the territorial Loud school. Fill your senses with the sounds of the Battle of 1812!

I feel very strongly that the future for the Mississinewa Battlefield Society and our event, Mississinewa 1812, is on the doorstep of major growth and development.  I envision our event to be one of the biggest anywhere and known nationwide.
